Sizing Power Supplies for Motors & Solenoids: The MEAN WELL NSP Peak Power Advantage
The Engineering Dilemma: Sizing for the Peak vs. the Steady State Power
Each month, TRC fields the same question from control engineers and system integrators: how do you handle peak load demand without specifying a higher wattage power supply?
Electrical loads are inherently dynamic. A DC motor starting, a pneumatic solenoid energizing, or a system cycling through initialization all produce a brief, high-amplitude current surge. The traditional response was to specify an oversized AC-DC power supply rated to absorb that worst-case transient continuously. That approach raises BOM cost, consumes control cabinet space, and leaves the power supply running well below rated output during normal operation.
The MEAN WELL NSP series is rated for 200% peak output power for up to five seconds. A 500W enclosed switching power supply sources 1000W during a transient demand without tripping overcurrent protection or producing a voltage drop that disrupts downstream controls. Sized to the true average load rather than the worst-case peak, the MEAN WELL NSP delivers full transient coverage at roughly half the continuous wattage rating of a traditionally specified unit.
What is Peak Power Capability?
Peak power capability is the rated capacity of an AC-DC power supply to deliver output power beyond its continuous nominal rating for a strictly defined, short duration window without triggering protection circuits or exceeding thermal limits.
The MEAN WELL NSP series, available in 12V output, such as the NSP-75-12 and above, is specified at 200% peak power for up to five seconds. A 500W unit sources 1000W during a transient demand. The internal thermal design and protection circuit thresholds are engineered to that duty cycle, meaning the unit handles the surge without tripping overcurrent protection, exceeding component temperature ratings, or producing a voltage drop that affects downstream load performance.
Real-World Math: Duty Cycle Sizing by the Average, Not the Spike
For motor and solenoid applications, the design target is average power consumption, not worst-case peak. Here is a common duty cycle calculation for a system with dynamic load demand:
Given System Conditions:
-
Peak Power Required: 1000W
-
Peak Duration: 5 seconds
-
Quiescent Power: 400W
-
Target Average Power: 500W
The MEAN WELL NSP series thermal design and protection circuit thresholds are rated to a specific peak duty cycle. To stay within those limits, the high-draw peak period must be offset by a sufficient quiescent period, keeping the long-term average within the unit's continuous rating. In practice, TRC recommends operating enclosed switching power supplies at no more than 80% of continuous rated output during the quiescent period. On a 500W unit, that is 400W, which is the quiescent value used in this example.
Duty Cycle Calculation:
-
Quiescent Duration: 25 seconds
-
Total Cycle Time: 30 seconds (5s peak + 25s idle)
-
Peak Duty Cycle: 16.7% (5 divided by 30 seconds)
At this duty cycle, the long-term average power draw is 500W, allowing a 500W NSP-500-24 unit to handle a 1000W transient load without exceeding its rated thermal or protection circuit limits. Figure 1 illustrates three complete 30-second cycles at this duty cycle, with the quiescent operating point held at 80% of continuous rated output and the 500W average load shown as a reference line.

3 Design Advantages of Peak Power AC-DC Power Supplies
Specifying a switching power supply with 200% peak power capability produces three measurable design advantages over a traditionally oversized unit:
-
Right-Sized Enclosure Footprint: Sizing to average load rather than peak demand reduces the physical footprint of the AC-DC power supply. On space-constrained control cabinet layouts, a smaller enclosed unit directly opens up usable real estate for other components.
-
Lower Bill of Materials Cost: A power supply rated to true average load costs less than an oversized unit rated to worst-case peak. Selecting a compact 500W unit over a continuously rated 1000W unit reduces per-unit BOM cost without compromising transient performance or protection circuit margins.
-
Efficient Long-Term Power Budget: Avoiding an over-specified supply prevents unused capacity from being locked into the power distribution network. The result is a tighter, more efficient power budget with documented headroom for future load additions or system modifications.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does peak power capability apply to all motor and solenoid load types?
Yes. Any load that draws a brief, high-amplitude current at startup or actuation qualifies. This includes DC brush and brushless motors, AC induction motors, pneumatic and hydraulic solenoid valves, relay coils, and valve actuators. The magnitude and duration of the inrush event varies by load type and size, but the NSP series 200% peak power rating and five second window covers the majority of industrial control applications. For loads with unusually high inrush ratios or extended startup durations, TRC recommends reviewing the specific load profile against the NSP datasheet before finalizing the selection.
What happens if peak demand exceeds the five second window on the MEAN WELL NSP series?
The NSP series responds to overload conditions in two stages. If the load demand exceeds the peak rating but the output voltage remains within regulation, the unit transitions into constant current mode, delivering maximum available current while the voltage droops under the load. If the output voltage droops below the protection threshold, the overcurrent protection circuit trips and the unit shuts down, followed by an automatic restart attempt. This is a normal protection response, not a failure mode. The solution is to review the duty cycle calculation, either reduce the peak duration, extend the quiescent period, or select a higher continuous wattage unit if the load profile genuinely requires sustained output beyond the rated peak window.
Can the MEAN WELL NSP series series be used in environments with frequent motor cycling?
Yes, with attention to internal component temperature rise. Repeated peak cycles in a high ambient temperature environment reduce the time available for internal components to cool between cycles, driving junction temperatures progressively higher. MEAN WELL publishes derating curves for the NSP series that specify output reduction requirements at elevated ambient temperatures. For applications with continuous high-frequency cycling, TRC recommends confirming the installation ambient temperature against the published derating curve and ensuring adequate enclosure ventilation to maintain component temperatures within rated limits.
Summary
Peak power capability reframes the AC-DC power supply selection criterion from worst case transient to true average load. As an example, a 500W MEAN WELL NSP unit covering a 1000W transient demand at 16.7% duty cycle is not a compromise. It is an engineered solution with documented thermal margins, defined protection circuit behavior, and a lower BOM cost than a continuously rated 1000W unit.
For motor and solenoid applications where inrush current drives the specification, the NSP series delivers the transient headroom without the enclosure footprint or cost penalty of an oversized supply.
